Meet Soniya Mehra, daughter of Vinod Mehra

Following her father’s footsteps, this feisty teenager is making a foray into Bollywood.

Late Vinod Mehra's daughter Soniya Mehra has replaced Amrita Arora in Kamal Sadanah's remake of Victoria No. 203.

Soniya Mehra doesn’t have many fond memories of her late father, actor Vinod Mehra. She was just a child when her dad passed away. But she has heard numerous accounts of him by her mother Kiran Mehra. And Soniya claims that ever since she can remember, she wanted to act in movies, like her father.

Soniya was brought up in Kenya. She began learning dance at the young age of four and joined London Academy of Music and Arts when she was nine. By the time she was in her teens her mind was firmly made up to join Hindi film industry.

Basically, Soniya is trained in theatre acting. But when she came to Mumbai she joined Anupam Kher's acting school to learn the nuances of film acting.

It was Anupam Kher only who referred Soniya’s name to actor-turned-producer Kamal Sadanah when he was looking for an actress for the modern remake of Victoria No. 203.

The role originally went to Amrita Arora, who opted out of the project because of contractual problems. But the film was already on the floors and Sadanah needed an urgent replacement. It was then Anupam Kher gave him Soniya’s photos and told him that the girl has potential. Soniya was eventually signed for the movie.

In Victoria No. 203, Soniya plays the same role once enacted by legendary Saira Banu in the original movie. Anupam Kher (in the role played by Ashok Kumar) and Om Puri (in the role essayed by Pran) are the main actors. The film is directed by Ananth Mahadevan and also features Jimmy Shergill (in the role played by Navin Nishchol in the original).

So far Soniya has signed just this one film, but she is looking forward to work with some best directors of Hindi film industry.

Ralph Fiennes impressed by 'Eklavya'

Hollywood actor Ralph Fiennes recently saw Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s forthcoming movie Eklavya at a special screening.

Fiennes, who has acted in acclaimed movies like The English Patient and The Constant Gardener, is in India for a UNESCO project. Last week he was invited by his friend and Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra for a screening of Eklavya that stars Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles.

There wasn’t anyone else except Chopra and Fiennes at the screening. Fiennes saw the entire movie in silence and was very impressed by Chopra’s work and Mr. Bachchan’s performance.

So much that after the screening Chopra and Fiennes went to Big B’s Jalsa residence to meet the superstar. In his meeting with Bachchan, Fiennes appreciated his acting in the film.

Even Vinod Chopra claims that Amitabh’s performance in Eklavya is the best of superstar’s career so far.

Fiennes also discussed theatre and plays with Mr. Bachchan. The Hollywood actor is looking forward to bring a play called Oedipus to India.

The movie, tentatively titled Tashan (Style), will mark Anil’s return to Yash Raj banner after a 15-year-long gap since Lamhe. The film also brings Saif and Akshay together on the big screen again.

Anil says he will give his best to convincingly play the villain in the film

Tashan will be directed by Victor.

Meanwhile, Anil’s performance in Nikhil Advani’s recently released Salaam-e-Ishq has been appreciated by the critics.

Upen's love affair ends on a bitter note?

Almost one-and-a-half years after they first started seeing each other, actor Upen Patel and model Shamita Singha are reported to have split.

Just a year ago, Upen and Shamita seemed inseparable. The two were often spotted together at parties and social dos and they also made a trip together to Britain. But so much has changed between them over the course of just a year.

Of late, reports have been pointing towards a rift and a possible split between the lovers. And a recent incident indicates that their relationship is not just over, but it has ended on a bitter note.

A few days back, Shamita went to a party along with her friends: fashion designer Gavin Miguel, singer Pratchee, photographer Jatin Kampani and others pals. Apparently, they decided to party after Gavin’s fashion show on the same day.

While they were partying, Upen walked in. He had an argument with Shamita, who promptly told him to mind his language. Reports have it that an annoyed Upen then took Shamita’s glass of wine and splashed it over her face. While Shamita broke down in tears, her friends told Upen that it was not the way to treat a lady. Upen, meanwhile, walked out of the place.

Sources say there has been friction between Upen and Shamita for sometime. But none had anticipated that Upen would act in such an indecorous way with Shamita.

Munnabhai chale Amerika

The inimitable Munnabhai and his funny sidekick Circuit are now headed to the United States in the third movie of the ‘Munnabhai’ series.

After taking on the medical system (in Munnabhai MBBS) and spreading the message of Gandhigiri (in Lage Raho Munnabhai), Munna and Circuit are now going across the Atlantic.

The idea to take the two characters into the US first arose when director Rajkumar Hirani saw Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi sitting together in a golf-cart in the US. The thought of two ‘bhais’ being transported to the US took Hirani’s fancy. When Dutt came to know about this idea, he liked it very much and asked Hirani to make a film on it. That is how Munnabhai Chale Amerika was conceived.

Even though Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi are still working on the script, the film’s producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Hirani have shot a small trailer of the movie.

The trailer shows both Munnabhai and Circuit learning English to go to Amerika.

Hirani says he wants to take the concept of Gandhigiri further in the next Munnabhai film. Using Munnabhai’s trademark humour, the film will take on George W Bush’s principles.

The film’s trailer was shot at Karjat, near Mumbai, on January 25. Hollywood star Ralph Fiennes, currently in India, accompanied Chopra (his friend) on the sets during the shoot. Fiennes also met Dutt and Warsi.

The Munnabhai trailer will be shown with Chopra’s forthcoming movie Eklavya, which hits the theatres on February 16.

Shilpa Shetty eyes Hollywood

Bollywood star and winner of the British reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother Shilpa Shetty is eyeing a Hollywood stint by signing a British team comprising leading UK publicist and lawyers to handle her career abroad.

UK's leading publicist and media professional Max Clifford of Max Clifford Associates has been signed as Shilpa’s UK publicist while Carter-Ruck, the biggest law firm in Britain which handles celebrities, will look after Shilpa's UK assignments, Dale Bhagwagar, publicist and spokesman of the actress said in Mumbai Saturday.

"Max Clifford is the most remarkable, enterprising and admirable publicist Shilpa could have had in UK. No matter she wins or loses, but with the Big Brother show, Shilpa has already made a mark for herself on the international scene and she has now got a dream team to work on her career overseas," he said.

Farhat Hussain of Cine Entertainment Promoters, a top celebrity show organizer of Indian origin, will be her UK agent, while Tasleem Begani will be Shilpa’s manager, he informed.

Hussain will be responsible for getting Hollywood movies as he has brought top Hollywood shows in Britain in the last two decades.

"From now on, Shilpa has a whole new world to look forward to. Mike will publicise her in the UK and US media," he added.

Dale said offers have started pouring in for the actress even when Shilpa reached the finals of the reality show. Her mother, Sunanda, is in London and she has signed the British team on behalf of Shilpa to promote her career overseas.

Shilpa, who started her career in 1993 with Baazigar, is awaiting the release of her latest movies Metro directed by Anurag Basu and Apne directed by Anil Sharma in the first half of 2007.

Minissha does Tango with Abhay

Bollywood beauty Minissha Lamba and actor Abhay Deol learnt the Latin American dance Tango for a song in their forthcoming movie.

In director Reema Kagti’s film Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., there is a song titled ‘Pyaar Ki Yeh Kahaani’ that has both Minissha and Abhay doing the Tango.

Since the dance form is pretty tough and involves complicated steps that require simultaneous use of legs, waist and arms, Minissha and Abhay had to undergo a rigorous training under dance experts.

The song has been choreographed by Danny, Kunjan and Savio.

Initially, it was hard for both the actors because the choreographed steps involved lots of lifts and turns. Abhay was particularly apprehensive in the beginning because he doesn’t like dancing before the camera. But once the two actors started training under the experts, they practiced arduously and were ready to put their best foot forward on the shooting day.

The movie’s producer Farhan Akhtar was satisfied with the end result.

John headed to the Oscars

Bollywood heartthrob John Abraham is elated by the Oscar nomination of Deepa Mehta’s film Water which stars him in one of the lead roles.

It was a very unlikely role for a man with a biker’s image. But John did not let the chance of working with Deepa Mehta go by. Defying his onscreen image, the actor slipped into dhoti-kurta, learnt Sanskrit shlokas and flute playing for his character Narayan in the film.

And now that Water has been nominated as the Canadian entry in Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars, John believes the movie has got its due appreciation.

John says it was the movie’s producer David Hamilton who rang up to give him the good news.

"I was extremely happy and excited after hearing about the nomination," John told a news channel.

The actor also told a website that he was looking forward to attend the 79th Annual Academy Awards on February 25.

"Yes, I will be attending the ceremony," John is quoted as saying.

However, John laments the fact that people in India have still not seen the film.

Water is a movie about the plight of Indian widows in 1930s. The film has Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas playing two widows.

Salman in Hindi remake of Pokkiri

The movie that rocked the box-office down south will now be remade in Hindi. And Salman Khan will play the lead role in it.

Writer-director Puri Jagannadh’s Telugu movie Pokkiri (starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role) has been a money-spinner in Andhra Pradesh, breaking box-office records of the last seven decades. The movie was such a big hit that a Tamil version Pokkiri has been made by Prabhudeva and stars Vijay and Asin in the lead roles.

Just a few weeks back Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor had acquired the rights to remake the film in Hindi. However, uncertainty remained as to who will play the lead role in the film.

Now, it is reliably learnt that Salman will play the role of a mafia gangster in the film. In fact, the movie tells the story of an undercover cop who joins the mafia to bring down the empire of a ruthless don. The film will have lots of action, stunts, romance and comedy.

It is still not known who will be Salman’s heroine in the movie.

Arshad plays a bad actor!

Talented Arshad Warsi will be seen playing a terrible actor in a film to be produced by Anil Kapoor.

The film, titled Shortcut, will be remake of a Malayalam movie. It will have Akshaye Khanna playing a film director and Arshad Warsi playing an ambitious, shrewd and talentless actor who wants to be a superstar. The movie will be an out-and-out comedy about the actor and director’s journey from anonymity to superstardom. Anees Bazmee will direct the film.

According to Anil Kapoor, it takes acting talent to play a poor actor in front of the camera. And Arshad fits the role perfectly. Arshad himself is very excited about the film. He is already on very friendly terms with Akshaye Khanna (they worked together in Priyadarshan’s Hulchul).

On a different front, Arshad has been training in football for Vivek Agnihotri’s film Goal, which has him working with John Abraham once again after Kabul Express.

What Shilpa has gained from 'Big Brother'

Despite the racist slurs, insults and tears that she has had to deal with in the big, bad world of the reality show 'Big Brother', Shilpa Shetty would have at least one reason to cheer when she comes out – her sagging career has got the most unexpected, but strongest boost yet.

"Shilpa has not really had a hit since Dhadkan, which was almost seven years ago. However since the unexpected outrage in UK since the Big Brother episode, her graph has suddenly shot up," trade analyst Taran Adarsh said.

"Companies in the UK are sure to be looking at endorsement deals and her acting career will pick up after this," Adarsh said.

The 31-year-old actress has cut down on the number of films she is doing in the hope that she will get to do "meaningful" roles, but that hasn't really worked for her. She did win critical acclaim for her role as a HIV positive woman in Phir Milenge but since then has not played a notable role.

"Distributors in the UK and advertisers are sitting up and taking notice. Whether its a publicity stunt or a genuine incident, it has definitely given a huge boost to her career and that too internationally," a film industry observer said.

Shilpa's next film is Anurag Basu's Metro in which she plays a wife struggling with the stress of city life and a crumbling marriage.

Ratings of Big Brother have gone hit the roof after a furore on alleged racist comments directed at Shilpa by fellow contestant Jane Goody, who has been evicted from the UK show.

"Not just in the UK, but when she does come out there will be a mad rush to sign her on by Indian producers as well," Adarsh added.

Aishwarya-Hrithik kiss chopped off

Those who still haven’t seen Dhoom 2 and those who want to see the movie again only for the Aishwarya Rai - Hrithik Roshan kiss are in for a disappointment as the scene has been chopped off from the film.

Reports say that the Bachchans asked Yashraj Films to axe the scene that shows their to-be daughter-in-law doing a "bold smooch".

However, Dhoom 2 director Sanjay Gadhvi has refused to comment on the issue and maintains that his relations with Yashraj Films haven’t been effected due to the controversy.

The kiss had raised eyebrows and sparked off controversies soon after the movie was released on November 24 last year. A lawyer had even filed a legal suit against Ash and Hrithik. However, no formal action has been taken against Yashraj Films.

The Bachchans never approved of the Ash-Hrithik kiss and speculation was rife that Abhishek Bachchan had stopped talking to Hrithik after seeing the kissing scene.

Now with the Ash-Abhishek wedding round the corner, it seems the Bachchans are all out to get a clean image of their would-be bahu.

Racist remarks made against Shilpa

Shilpa Shetty has apparently been at the receiving end of some racist remarks in the house of Big Brother.

Shilpa, who is one of the 'hottest' contestants of UK television show Celebrity Big Brother, continues to hold her position in the house in the show’s second week, much to the annoyance of certain other contestants in the house.

Jack Tweedy, for instance, has been bitching about Shilpa with his girlfriend Jade Goody, and he has allegedly made a racist remark against Shilpa, calling her "you bloody Paki". Paki is a derogatory term mostly used by the whites in UK and Canada to insult a South Asian.

Goody has said Shetty "makes my skin crawl", while Danielle Lloyd, a former beauty queen, has called her "a dog."

Jo O'Meara, another contestant, refused to eat a chicken roasted by Shetty because she claimed it was too spicy and undercooked, prompting Shetty to burst in to tears.

'Jackson Five' star Jermaine Jackson has consoled Shetty by quoting his brother Michael's hit Man in The Mirror. "They need to look in the mirror before they can make that charge," he told her.

Although the television channel airing the programme is said to have muted the word with a beep sound, but the movement of Jack’s lips reveal what he said. Shilpa was reportedly shocked at hearing the comment but she did not respond. Apparently, she deems Jacks remark not worth responding, and very rightly so.

Meanwhile, Shilpa has lent her support to PETA in UK. And the Animal activists in their turn are encouraging voters to back Shilpa to become the show’s next winner.

Who will be Madhuri's hero!

Much has been speculated about the man who will play Madhuri Dixit’s hero in her comeback film in Bollywood. It is a well-known fact by now that Madhuri is returning to tinsel town with a Yash Raj film titled Aaja Naachley.

To be directed by ace cinematographer Anil Mehta, the film will mark Madhuri’s comeback after a long gap since her marriage.

However, speculation has been rife about who will pair with Madhuri in the film. Names like Kunal Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Bobby Deol and Akshay Kumar have been guessed. But it appears that none of the above will get to share the screen space with Madhuri. Grapevine has it that Akshaye Khanna has been finalized for the role.

It is being said that Aditya Chopra from Yashraj Films wanted someone with high acting caliber to star opposite Madhuri in the film. Akshaye, who is known for his intensity, apparently suited the role.

Although Madhuri will begin shooting for the movie in January, Akshaye will reportedly begin shooting his portions in February. Other actors in the movie include Konkona Sen Sharma, Ranvir Shorey and Anupam Kher.

It is believed that Madhuri plays a theatre actress in the film. However, people at Yashraj Films are keeping the film’s story and details about Madhuri’s role in it under secrecy.

Akshay Kumar returns to action

It has been close to three years when Akshay Kumar was last seen in an action flick. The handsome star who began his acting career as an action hero in a string of Khiladi movies, had a complete image makeover in the last three years. From action and fights, Akshay moved to romantic and comedy roles.

In fact, comedy is something he has become very good at. Lest he gets stuck in a fixed image again, Akshay is now signing films of different genres. One of the projects he has recently signed is an out-and-out action flick to be produced by Rohan Sippy and directed by Sridhar Raghavan (who directed Ek Haseena Thi).

Raghavan is said to have written the movie’s script keeping Akshay in mind. And when he narrated the script to Akshay, the star immediately gave his consent to the project.

Rohan Sippy says a lot of preparation is needed before shooting this movie. In fact, the enterprising producer is already said to be working on the film’s promotional plans.

Akshay presently has three films on hand and all of them are different genres. There is Anees Bazmee’s comedy film Welcome with Katrina Kaif, there is Priyadarshan’s romantic drama Chandramukhi and Sajid Khan’s multistarrer Hey Baby.

However, Akshay’s next release will be Namaste London which is a love story between a Punjabi boy and a London girl played by Katrina.

Hrithik tentative about Rakeysh Mehra film

Even though Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has won the Best Director statuette at Star Screen Awards, he is having difficulty in finding a hero for his next movie.

Mehra had first finalized Abhishek Bachchan to play the lead role in his next film Delhi 6, which is based on Mehra’s youth days in Chandni Chowk. Surprisingly, Abhishek opted out of the movie after a deal could not be finalized between UTV and AB Corp to produce the movie jointly.

Later, Mehra had approached Hrithik Roshan for the role. Hrithik had expressed interest but is now said to be hesitant in committing to the project.

While some people speculate that after the success of Krrish and Dhoom 2 and after winning two awards for Best Actor (GIFA award and Screen award), Hrithik now wants to do big movies only, sources say that Hrithik will be too busy in the first half of this year to commit to Mehra’s film.

He is presently shooting for Ashutosh Gowarikar’s movie Jodha Akbar and after that will move on to Zoya Akhtar’s first movie Kismat Talkies with Kareena Kapoor.

Rakeysh Mehra, who wants to start shooting Delhi 6 in the coming months, is now said to be thinking of signing Akshay Kumar instead.

Sameera in a film on voyeurism!

Bollywood lass Sameera Reddy seems to have become a favourite of Bengali director Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

Sameera won accolades for her performance as a woman with American dreams in Dasgupta’s previous movie Kaalpurush. Now the highly acclaimed filmmaker has signed her for his next film as well.

Titled Me, Yasim and Madhubala, the film will be about voyeurism. Sameera will play a Kathak dancer named Madhubala in the movie.

Despite the film’s apparently provocative subject (voyeurism), there won’t been anything racy or sleazy about it. The movie will explore the way new technology has invaded women’s private space.

Sameera has already begun shooting for the film, and despite her unfamiliarity with Bengali Sameera has been picking up the language very fast. She reportedly delivered an 8-page dialogue in a single shot while filming in Kolkata recently.

When John refused to work with Kangana

The dashing John Abraham had refused to work with newcomer Kangana Ranaut in two films.

John who himself was a model had a tough time to break into the film industry and later on when he had carved a niche for himself, was supposedly apprehensive to work with Kangana.

But John has also worked alongside other new actresses, like Udita Goswami in Paap. Or perhaps John was well aware of Kangana’s capabilities and was afraid of being overshadowed by the actress.

John refused to work opposite Kangana in Imtiaz Ali’s Rock Star and Anurag Kashyap’s No Smoking.

In Bollywood often the hero and his preferences are always taken into consideration first hence even though Kashyap was keen to work with Kangana, John’s decision forced him to opt for the buxom Ayesha Takia instead.

However Kangana too has had her share of disagreements with her co-star Shiney Ahuja who was seen opposite her in Gangster and Who Lamhe. Though Shiney and Kangana share amazing on-screen chemistry, off-screen the two actors barely acknowledge each other.

Bhansali to direct opera in ParisAdd to Clippings

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be in Paris in 2008 to direct an opera.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to move into a different direction. He will be in Paris in 2008 to direct an opera.

Bhansali has been signed on by the prestigious opera company Theatre du Chatelet to direct an opera next year.

"It's an honour. I think my operatic mode of story telling in Devdas convinced the Theatre du Chatelet to approach me.
Frankly, I was flattered but unsure whether I wanted to do it. After all a staged opera is an entirely different discipline from cinema."

Sanjay informs that he has always been fascinated by the opera. "The experience would rejuvenate me as a creative artiste, help me connect with creative spaces more openly," he says.

Priyanka learns desi martial art

Priyanka Chopra will be seen in yet another spunky role in Goldie Behl’s movie Drona.

Just a few months back we saw Priyanka showing a bit of Ju Jitsu and Karate skills in Farhan Akhtar’s movie Don. Now she has been training under an expert for Gatka, which is a specialized form of fighting from the Punjab belt of North India.

A trainer from Ludhiana has reportedly been roped in to give training to Priyanka. The training includes both defensive and attacking moves.

Priyanka has already shot for a few portions of her action scenes in the movie’s shooting schedule in Prague, Czech Republic. Despite freezing temperature there, Priyanka gave her action scenes with full gusto. And she seems quite impressed by the final results on the screen.

Abhishek Bachchan is the hero of Drona. The movie is the second directorial attempt by Goldie Behl whose first movie Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai was a flop.

No Smoking behind camera

No Smoking, the movie with an anti-smoking message, is reforming the smokers on the film’s sets also.

While a non-smoker like John Abraham has to smoke before the camera, it is quite the opposite for some regular smokers behind the camera on the sets of producer Kumar Mangat’s movie No Smoking.

Mangat has reportedly gotten strict with the film’s crew to keep them from smoking on the sets because the whole purpose of the film is to give an anti-smoking message. The producer has begun fining anyone who is caught smoking on the sets. And the fine is also hefty: Rs 500.

This strict code does not spare even the movie’s director Anurag Kashyap who is a regular smoker. Whenever Anurag is caught smoking a cigarette he has to shell out Rs. 500.

Moreover, lest anyone smoke on the sly, Mangat has reportedly hired a cameraman to photograph those who try to smoke stealthily. Actor Ranvir Shorey, too, has been fined by the producer. And if any unitmember refuses to pay the fine, Kumar tells him the amount will be deducted from their remuneration.
The producer is said to have raised more than one lakh rupees from the fines so far. John, who gets to smoke a lot in the movie, has not been fined even once because he does not smoke in real life.

The film tells the story of a chain smoker who joins a rehabilitation centre after his marriage comes to the point of falling apart because of his compulsive habit. The movie has Ayesha Takia pairing with John.

Naseer takes Big B's place

It is a role for which director Jagmohan Mundhra sought Amitabh Bachchan. However, the megastar has turned down the offer.

Even as his Provoked is slated to release worldwide in February, Mundhra has already begun working on his next project titled Shoot On Sight.

The film will again be set in UK. It will tell the true story of an Asian Muslim cop in London whose loyalty to the system is doubted after the July 7 train bombings in London. The film attempts to highlight a country’s changing point of view towards Asian Muslims after the terrorist attack.

The movie’s title perhaps refers to the shoot on sight order given to British police after the attacks. The order gave the cops legal authority to shoot any suspected individual about to carry a terrorist attack. Tragically, an innocent Brazilian died in once such incident.

Earlier, Mundhra had approached Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan to play the lead role of the Asian Muslim cop. But both actors expressed their inability to do the movie. Now, Mundhra has signed Naseeruddin Shah for the part.

Naseer, who is presently out of action because of his son Hamid’s accident, will most likely begin shooting for the movie in March or April. The film will also star British actress Greta Scacchi as Naseer's wife.

This will be third consecutive movie by Mundhra to be based on a real life character or incident.

This Vidya loves being SRK's heroine

No we are not talking about Vidya Balan but Vidya Malvade who is acting with Shah Rukh Khan in Chak De India.

The Yashraj movie is not the first time Vidya is pairing with the King Khan. She has already done a Santro ad with the superstar. But it took Vidya a couple of months shooting with SRK to know the man behind the superstar.

In the film, Vidya plays a Punjabi girl who wants to play hockey but can’t get approval from her conservative Sikh family. Shah Rukh plays the coach of a girls’ hockey team. The coach he plays is a man with a scandalous past.

Having shot a long schedule with SRK in Australia, Vidya is pretty much impressed by the amount of attention he pays to his work.

In Vidya’s words, SRK "doesn’t just concern himself about his role but takes active interest in other characters and helps other artistes to deliver better".

She is now eager to resume shooting for the movie in Delhi. And why not? It is not everyday that one gets to work with the superstar of Bollywood.

Chak De India is being directed by Shimit Amin, who directed the hard-hitting thriller Ab Tak Chhappan. Shimit has also worked as an editor in the past.
